Expanding our Horizons

Pete and I just returned from a short trip to Wyoming visiting our friends at the Carbon County Museum in Rawlins, where we will be showing art next spring. How nice to step out of our "normal" views and see some new places. Wyoming has expansive views and traveling during the week made us feel as if we had the whole place to ourselves.

The photos we took will most likely become some of Pete's newest paintings, and I picked up some Wyoming rocks for the stoneflies that I will create for the Carbon County Museum.

We would like to encourage everyone to step off the normal route and expand your horizons.

"The Art of Nature - The Nature of Art" explores Colorado's Nature through acrylic paintings on wood panel and canvas. The artist, Pete Radliff, respects nature’s beauty, power and fragility and endeavors to incorporate these qualities into the fabric of the canvas. The art provides a release of expression as we interpret the natural world. His goal is to create a place of common ground with the viewer as we all seek to strike an accord with nature and absorb her lessons.

"As a trained archaeologist and geologist, I’ve approached the natural world looking at small characteristics often piecing them together to interpret the bigger picture. It wasn’t until a work colleague of mine pointed out that I “seem to like shapes and light” that I realized this to be true for my photography as well. While my pictures are not close-ups, they are parts of a whole, larger object or system. As we look at that smaller part of the whole we see how light and color play in
that small space and more often than not, it makes for an interesting photograph.

Some of my work people would consider “Landscapes”. I do not consider myself a landscape photographer; those are better left to Ansell Adams and John Fielder. Again, I wait until the light brings out something that is abnormal in the landscape, some color, some action, something not seldom witnessed."

Bleu Knight was born and raised outside of Philadelphia, PA. At the age of 16 she moved to Santa Fe, NM where she received 4 years of formal training in fine art. She went on to formally study biochemistry and earned her Master's degree in 2006. Bleu was inspired to create this series of paintings by the beauty she finds every day in nature. She recreates these forms and offers them to Buddha, hoping that he will also find them beautiful and bestow his blessings upon her.

Bleu's beautiful floral oils will be on display at Soft Pinecone Studio & Gallery from September 4th through the 27th.
Regular gallery hours are Thursdays through Saturdays from 10am to 4pm, First Fridays until 9pm and Third Fridays until 8pm.

So Cherry Creek is not the only art festival in Denver for 2008. Coming at you First Friday, August 1st from 1 pm to 10 pm is Denver's Art Day on Santa Fe. This event is brought to you by The Art District on Santa Fe, NEWSED CDC and SFDRC (the people who bring you Denver's Cinco de Mayo Festival). On two very large blocks between 7 th and 9 th Avenues on Santa Fe Drive there will be plenty to see including the dozens of artists display their most spectacular wares and contemporary works. The Eye Behind The Camera
Born and raised in New Orleans, I always had the natural desire to live and work within the arts. While experimenting with different forms of art, even music and theatre, I went on to obtain my Art Education degree and a minor in Art History from L.S.U. I still dabble in various art mediums, but photography has become my passion! I have been photographing the world around me since I received my first camera at the age of eight. A masterpiece waiting to be discovered was peering back at me through my camera. After studying film photography for years and even teaching darkroom techniques to kids, I began to study the technological wonders of digital photography. With the opportunity to work directly with some of New Orleans' top photographers, plenty of photo shoots to always keep me busy, and my art on display around the city, life could not be going much better for me in New Orleans. But as Hurricane Katrina forced me to realize, there was still a world waiting to be discovered through the eyes of my camera. Subsequently, Denver, Colorado has become my new home and is now my view from behind the lens.

Nicole's work will be on display and for sale at Soft Pinecone Productions Studio & Gallery from July 31st through August 30th, 2008.

We at Soft Pinecone Productions Studio & Gallery are happy to welcome Susan Mikkelson of Mikkelson Pottery to the gallery.
Susan Mikkelson began creating her one of a kind pieces in 1988. She discovered Pottery at a small studio near her home. Before she knew it she had a key to the place and was there every day. She continued her creative process back in Colorado at various Community Centers and Colleges. Susan is a Colorado Native. She now enjoys working from her studio and home in Littleton, Colorado. She is inspired by nature, and incorporates many aspects of nature in her work. She recycles glass from Colorado Rivers and uses Leaves from her backyard.

Soft Pinecone Productions Studio & Gallery welcomes Joan Arent as our "featured artist". Joan will be exhibiting with resident artists Pete Radliff and Carol Radliff.

Joan Arent has studied abroad in Belgium, Switzerland, France & Italy, at the Institute of Art in New York City, Princeton University, Metro state college, CU Boulder, the Art Students League of Denver, the Art Institute of Alexandria, Virginia, and with Stephen Quiller in Creede Colorado.Arent is a member of the Evergreen Artists Association, Littleton Art Association, Evergreen and Foothills Art Center and the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.

"Art is an opportunity to escape to a different place," says Arent. "My process in creating offers me the feelings of joy, excitement, fun, release, energy, intrigue and more. I can only hope that I can offer that gift to the viewer. Each piece I create reflects my love for movement, energy and the positive in the world around us. I hope to inspire children and adults to believe in who they are and the endless possibilities that are within all of us."
